OHIO EYE SURGERY

Ohio Eye Surgery

Lasik Eye Surgery is a common surgery to correct the vision of people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or who have astigmatism.   The actual term “Lasik” is short for Laser in situ keratomileusis, which means to use a laser to reshape the cornea underneath a corneal flap.

The Lasik eye surgery process is completed by an experienced eye surgeon, who cuts the patient’s cornea to create a flap that is peeled back.  Once the flap of cornea is peeled back, a laser is used to reshape the cornea that will refract light correctly into the eye.  This allows the patient to see much clearer and sharper images.   Once the reshaping of the cornea has taken place, the eye surgeon then repositions the corneal flap so it can heal in place.

Lasik surgery is a fantastic alternative to contact lenses or glasses.  There are many reasons an individual should consider getting Lasik Eye Surgery instead of continuing wearing glasses or contacts.  Lasik Eye Surgery can permanently correct most types of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatisms, which means you will never have to worry about changing your contact lenses or eye glasses prescription.  Many patients who wear glasses and contacts experience a decrease in vision quality as they age.  This leads to them having to constantly get new prescriptive contact or glass lenses.  However, through Lasik eye surgery, many patients have perfect eye sight for the rest of their life.  Lasik is one of the leading procedures to correct vision because it is not painful and the procedure only takes between 5 to 10 minutes.  The laser is controlled by a computer, which eliminates human error and has more precise results.

LASIK is performed by an ophthalmologist, which is a doctor that specializes in the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eye.  Ophthalmologist not only performs different types of eye surgery, including LASIK, but they can also prescribe medicinal treatments for eye diseases.  Because ophthalmologist are medical doctors, they have graduated from college and medical school and have also completed a residency for a minimum of 4 years just like any other medical doctor would have been required to do.  In the United States, ophthalmologists are also Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.  Some ophthalmologist that attended medical schools that specialize in Osteopathy may hold a Doctor of Osteopathy degree, also known as DO.   Both doctors who have received their Osteopathy Degree must meet the same requirements as those with an MD in Ophthalmology.

Patients choose LASIK for the convenience of not having to worry about glasses or contact lenses for the rest of their life.  Others do not like the way glasses or contact lenses look or feel.  Although not everyone qualifies for LASIK surgery, it is an increasingly popular alternative to eye glasses or contact lenses.
